Spotify has made the big announcement that it's been building up to and it seems that some of the rumors were, partially correct. Spotify has indeed revealed something related to apps, but it's not what everyone was expecting, an extended API.

Rather, Spotify is now enabling third party developers, that it chooses, to create applications that live inside the desktop Spotify app. The idea makes sense since the apps expand on functionality that is missing or not very developed in Spotify.

'We’re introducing a new world inside Spotify. It’s a world where there’s even more music for you to discover and a ton of new experiences to be enjoyed. Spotify Apps are here!,' Spotify CEO Daniel Ek wrote.

'Spotify Apps are a bunch of cool, exciting and integrated apps inside Spotify, created by some of the best and brightest in the world. Each app brings you a new music experience tailored to you,' he said.

What Are the Best Add-ons or Third-Party Apps for Spotify? Spotify, the king of the music streaming world, is packed with many great features for users to enjoy and discover music. It focuses on offering users curated playlists, including the algorithmic playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar or alternative playlists built by users. However, the update – being rolled out in the next few weeks – will see the phasing out of third-party applications from Spotify’s desktop client. A new Lyrics button, located next to the play bar, has been designed to give users an area to help them to “start singing along”.

For now, Spotify has partnered with some big names to create apps that add discovery, recommendations and other enhanced functionality.

For example, users can get recommendations from the likes of Last.fm or We Are Hunted to discover new music to listen to, based on the things they already like. There are also curated lists and recommendations from Rolling Stones, The Guardian and Pitchfork.

Third Party Spotify Apps

The TuneWiki app adds lyrics, synced to the music, to Spotify while the Songkick app tries to find concerts from your favorite bands and artists near you.

Spotify plans to add more apps in time, but each new one has to be approved before becoming available on the platform. The apps are built with HTML5 and run via a JavaScript library that Spotify has built for the platform.

It's a bold idea and it should make Spotify better and more interesting. The only question is whether Spotify will be able to convince that many people to create apps since there don't seem to be too many incentives for the developers.

Spotify is one of the biggest companies in the music streaming industry and it is one of the most influential brands which has almost stopped people from downloading songs. Now, this means that the piracy of songs has reduced greatly as well as data plans around the world have played their part too. Now, we know that Apple also has a similar service called Apple Music offering music playback online similar to Google’s YouTube Music which was earlier Google Play Music. Talking about Apple Music, in particular, Apple added live lyrics in the app with the launch of iOS 13.

This means that when the song is playing, you will also see the lyrics of that particular song being played and syncing with the song as well. Basically, this is similar to the song lyrics app we had in the past which would highlight the exact words currently playing for the song. Now, it is interesting to note that Spotify is testing the same feature for its app as well. You will soon be able to see real-time lyrics inside the Spotify app syncing with the song you are playing.

TechCrunch reports that this feature is currently seen in limited regions so it might be a staged rollout for the test phase. Spotify also confirmed that they are indeed working on such a feature for its app and it is done “in a small number of markets”. Spotify’s spokesperson added that “At Spotify, we are always testing new products and experiences but have no further news to share at this time.”

As far as the lyrics inside Spotify are concerned, they are part of the integration with Musixmatch which is an app showing real-time lyrics for songs. Therefore, Spotify is outsourcing lyrics from third-party as well but it is a welcome change none the less.
