The following year, Burnley confirmed that Breaking Benjamin would continue as a quintet, and in June of 2015 they returned with their first album of new material in six years, Dark Before Dawn. The comeback effort featured the lineup of Burnley (who also produced), guitarists Jasen Rauch and Keith Wallen, bassist Aaron Bruch, and drummer Shaun Foist. Spotify has had a history of amalgamation – merging with Facebook in 2011 and Tinder this September. These merges raise concerns on whether or not more social media platforms will be forming partnerships with music streaming services.

“I think media convergence is a well-established pattern, and that these hybrids are therefore unsurprising… This is less about the affordances of the platform, though certainly, this is important, and more about the market potency such fusion brings” says Dr. Benjamin Matthews, Ph.D. holder in communications.

“Picture yourself at the helm of a large media outlet. How do you achieve growth and simultaneously secure your position in the market? The sector changes rapidly. Thus, the best way forward is to aggregate your platform with others that arise in order to leverage the competition.”

Bhuva Narayan, coordinator of the information and knowledge management program at UTS believes these merges are a part of a broader marketing strategy.

“It was inevitable. It’s all about convergence and synergies for commercial purposes” Bhuva said.

For music artists, social media expands the reach of music streaming services and increases the audience of their work.

“In commercial terms [currently], it is presently the case that streaming through centralised points of distribution like Spotify are simply untenable for most artists. They just don’t receive enough of the income generated” says Dr. Benjamin Matthews.
